Viewing the latest page version

Viewing the latest page changes (cache issues)

Many Services and/or your web browser cache (store) pages so that the next time you visit, the page appears to load quickly. While this is helpful in speeding up your entire web experience, it can be terribly annoying if you are not seeing the latest version of the page. Especially for sites that are updated on a daily basis.

What Can I do?

In order to view the latest version of pages you visit, it may be necessary to change your web browser settings to verify that the latest page is being visited. This is accomplished by making changes to your browser options or preferences.

How to do it.

The following instructions are for the most popular browsers. Please keep in mind that the exact version of the browser you are running may require some variation from the descriptions below, but these guidelines should get you pointed in the right direction.

America On-Line

AOL typically caches pages you've visited previously (a real pain sometimes) and only checks for and loads new versions if your cache settings are set correctly.

TO CHANGE AOL CACHE SETTINGS:

After opening your web browser window in AOL, click the PREFS button on the top of the browser. (If you're reading this on AOL, this page is currently displayed in your browser window.)

then select the ADVANCED folder within the prefs dialoque box.

in the advanced folder, look for "Temporary Internet Files" and click the SETTINGS button.

In the Settings box, click the "check for newer version of stored pages" radio button next to EVERY VISIT TO THE PAGE

next click the EMPTY FOLDER button.

Click OK (closes Settings dialogue box)

Click OK (closes the PREFS dialogue box)

now close and re-open the Web Browser and go to the page you wish to view.

If the current page is still not displayed, hit RELOAD.

After doing the above, you should be able to see the latest version of the page every time you come back.


Netscape

From the text menu at the top of your Netscape browser window, click on OPTIONS

From the drop down list that appears, select and click on Network Preferences.

In the Preferences dial;ogue box which should appear, click on the tab at the top labeled CACHE.

In the Cache section, adjacent to the phrase "Verifiy Documents:" click the radio button labeled "Every Time"

Then click on the button labeled "Clear memory Cache Now" - click OK in response to the verification query.

Next click on the button labeled "Clear Disk Cache Now" - click OK in response to the verification query.

Click OK at the bottom of the Preferences dialogue box.

Revisit the page in question.

If the current page is still not displayed, hit RELOAD while holding down the SHIFT key.

After doing the above, you should be able to see the latest version of the page every time you come back.


Microsoft Internet Explorer

From the text menu at the top of your Internet Explorer browser window, click on TOOLS

From the drop down list that appears, select and click on INTERNET OPTIONS. (If this option isn't present, click on FILE on the text menu and look for it there).

In the Options dialogue box which should appear, click on the tab at the top labeled GENERAL.

In the area entitled "Temporary Internet Files" click on the button labeled SETTINGS.

Below the phrase "Check for newer versions of stored pages:" click the radio button labeled "Every visit to the page" and click "OK"

Then click on the button labeled "Empty Folder" to remove older versions already in your cache - click OK in response to the verification query.

Click OK at the bottom of the Settings dialogue box.

Click OK at the bottom of the Options dialogue box.

Revisit the page in question.

If the current page is still not displayed, hit RELOAD while holding down the SHIFT key.

After doing the above, you should be able to see the latest version of the page every time you come back.

If you continue to have problems with not being able to load the most current version of pages, you may need to contact your Internet service provider.
